Earthquake Preparedness Tips

The 1,200-km-long Philippine fault zone is a major tectonic feature that transects the whole Philippine archipelago from northwestern Luzon to southeastern Mindanao.
This arc-parallel, left-lateral strike slip fault is divided into several segments and has been the source of large-magnitude earthquakes in recent years, such as the 1973 Ragay Gulf Earthquake (Magnitude 7.0), 1990 Luzon Earthquake (M 7.7) and 2003 Masbate Earthquake (M 6.2). The high seismic risk posed by this fault zone requires a large-scale active faults map, a fundamental data set for seismic hazard mitigation.
Since 2003, Kyoto University and PHIVOLCS-DOST have been mapping the Philippine Fault. At present, approximately 90 percent of on-land-stretch of the PFZ has been mapped. This delineation is based on interpretation of available large-scale (at least 1:30,000) aerial photographs. In areas where there are no available aerial photographs, various satellite images are used to map the fault zone. The identified surface traces of the PFZ are then plotted onto 1:50,000 topographic maps published by NAMRIA (National Mapping and Resource Information Authority) and compiled using commonly used Geographic Information System platforms such as MapInfo Professional and Generic Mapping Tool. These active fault maps are now available at www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph and upon request to PHIVOLCS-DOST.
At Home
1.) Reinforcing shelving, fixing tall furniture to the wall and keeping items low and safe will make your living environment a safer place.
2.) Recognizing the shelters and their routes both at home and nearby.
3.) Recognizing the place of switch for gas and electricity and how to turn off.
4.) Preparing an emergency box and fire extinguishers. Let all the family members know where they located and how to use them.
5.) In case of any problem in the building, ask licensed engineers or agencies to check and retrofit it.
6.) Check the equipments for fire fighting and exercise the plan for disaster prevention and rescue regularly if you are living in a high-rise building.
In a Public Place
1.)Propose an emergency plan and assign the staffs or servers to take in charge of the disaster prevention and emergency response.
2.) Check the equipments for fire fighting regularly.
3.) Exercise the disaster prevention regularly.
4.) Check the billboards and the house from the sun or any dislodged item constantly.
Indoors
The key to effective disaster prevention is planning. Stay calm and do not rush out in panic. When you are inside a structurally sound building or home, you must stay there.
1.) Turn off gas. electricity and water supplies.
2.) Using an appropriate exit to keep away from any congestion in a public place.
3.) Open the door in order to avoid that the door is jammed by the large deformation in an earthquake.
4.) Stay away from the glass window and find a safe shelter.
5.) Sit or lie down beside or underneath a table or bed to protect against possible falling objects.
6.) Incase of fire, put it out right away.
7.) Do not use the elevators and use only the stairs.
Outdoors
1.) If you are driving a car or riding a bike, do not stop immediately and instead, drive to the roadside and find an open space.
2.) If you are walking down the street, run into an open space.
3.) Keep away from gas station, glass curtain wall, vending machine, electric post and construction site.
4.) Look out for any possible falling objects and cover your head.
5.) If your are on a bus or a train, do not panic and stay inside the bus while covering your head.
6.) Stay away from the hill, riverside and seaside then find an open space.
7.) If you are crossing the overpass and underpass, walk away calmly.
1.) Help each other for the disaster rescue. Take a look in nearby buildings people inside the buildings might need your help.
2.) If electricity is has recovered from a blackout, do not use any electric devices right away. Check if there is a gas leak first to avoid fire.
3.) Listen to radio and watch television.
4.) Do not use the telephone unless somebody has been injured or if there is any damage in the building.
5.) Inspect the house for cracks.
6.) If the gas pipeline is damage or there is a smell of gas, do not use any gas or electric device. Leave the house immediately.
